This week’s Hub Focus features Head of Consignments and Acquisitions Richard Wrightson in a very special and particularly important 1969 Jensen FF which is currently offered for sale at The Classic Motor Hub.
Which car would you currently buy from The Classic Motor Hub Hangar?
I would have to say the 1969 Jensen FF.
Why this particular car?
For so many reasons but mainly the condition and the history of this particular car. It is essentially a brand-new Jensen FF and is exactly, if not better, than when it left the factory 51 years ago, right down to the original Vortex 8 Track radio that was an option on this car when new. Put simply you will not find a better example anywhere in the world.
It has been the subject of a four year, no-expense-spared restoration that most Pebble Beach Concours winning cars would be proud of. The attention to detail is remarkable, the owner even asked the world’s leading authority to oversee the restoration to make sure everything was exactly right. The cost to restore these cars properly is astronomical, far in excess of what we are asking for it today. For the full restoration story visit the Jensen museum website.
What about the history, why does that appeal to you?
This actual car was sold new to GKN who were interested in developing the Ferguson Formula (FF) system on the new Jensen, so ordered this actual car as a development vehicle and led to the creation of the record-breaking GKN FFF100. Although not a commercial success, the technological advances to come from the project launched GKN’s Driveline subsidiary. Off the back of the development in this car, GKN went on to buy the license for the FF system and today GKN is one of the world’s manufacturers of driveline components, supplying 90% of the world’s car manufacturers and producing All Wheel Drive systems for Jaguar Land Rover, Audi and Ford.
We have the quotes for supplying the car to GKN, including the specification and even some hand-written calculations to reduce the price for a trade deal! One could argue that all significant 4-wheel drive cars owe their beginnings to this Jensen FF and now you can buy that piece of history at The Classic Motor Hub. That is pretty special in my book.
